Abstract
Aneurysm of the abdominal aorta is one of the most serious diseases unless surgically repaired,
because most patients die from rupture or hemorrhage within a year.
This report is concerned with our experiences in surgically repairing three cases of aortic aneurysm,
which includes physical and X-ray findings, surgical management and results.
1. While it is true that most aneurysms are almost always arteriosclerotic in natre, the three cases
we treated showed a somewhat different picture, histologically and clinically.
2. The most common physical findings were the pulsatile mass in the abdomen and the degree the
tenderness correlated to the severity of the underlying pathological changes.
3. It is well known that plain roentgenograms of the abdomen frequently reveals a ring of calcifi
cation outlining the aneurysmally dilated aorta but this was not evident in our three cases.
An aortography is usually normal and not helpful for diagnosing but is useful in determining the
location, irregularity of lumen at the site of the aneurysm and the extent of associated occlusive
disease.
4. Excision and graft replacement is the treatment of choice. In the three cases we experienced,
operations were performed before any of them became complicated by rupture or hemorrhage and
their postoperative courses were uneventful.
